The Summa Health System Behavioral Health Institute is seeking an outstanding clinical/counseling psychologist to join our well-established Department of Psychiatry team of 40 clinicians. Our current open position is split half time providing Consultation Liaison Services in the Summa Health System Surgical Services’ Level I Trauma Department and half time working in our Center for Traumatic Stress specialty outpatient clinic. Each position is described in greater detail below. The selected candidate will become a member of the Summa Health Medical Group, a multi-specialty group practice of 300 physicians employed by the Summa Health System.
Consultation Liaison Psychologist - Surgical Services Trauma Department – Akron Ohio
To provide psychological services within the Consultation Liaison Psychiatry/Psychology (CLP) service, specifically for the Surgical Level I Trauma Department. This includes bedside patient assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and brief intervention and appropriate referrals for surgical/critical care trauma patients who have positive blood alcohol or toxicology screens, are showing signs or symptoms of psychological trauma, have experienced a major life change (i.e., amputation, paralyzed), have attempted suicide, or have baseline and/or new onset depression, anxiety, psychiatric diagnosis, etc. This position will provide counseling and support to family members of trauma patients who might not survive and work collaboratively with palliative care service as well as LifeBanc (the organ procurement agency in the area). This position supports the interdisciplinary treatment and research teams. This position might be asked to supervise pre-doctoral psychology trainees from local universities. Essential Functions • Provides clinical treatment for victims of acute trauma • Provides counseling and support to family members of patients as needed • Provides results of positive drug and/or blood alcohol testing • Conduct suicide assessments and discharge recommendations (i.e., psychiatric hospitalization versus home) • Conduct capacity evaluations • Supervises pre-doctoral psychology trainees • Effectively works with interdisciplinary treatment teams • Interfaces with and is a member of research teams as requested by Chair of Trauma Services
Outpatient Trauma Psychologist – Center for Traumatic Stress – Akron, Ohio The Center for Traumatic Stress (CTS) at Summa Health System is seeking outstanding clinical/counseling psychologists with expertise and interest in assessment and treatment of PTSD and other trauma-related problems. Duties primarily will include individual and/or group psychotherapy and providing clinical supervision to doctoral and postdoctoral psychology trainees. The CTSTS provides an exciting clinical and research atmosphere.
• The CTS is a specialty clinic providing outpatient and intensive outpatient clinical services to a demographically diverse patient population with various types of trauma exposure.
• We emphasize empirically supported individual and group interventions (e.g., Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy), partner with other clinics/departments (e.g., Inpatient Psychiatry, Primary Care, Women’s Health), conduct research to advance the science of traumatic stress, and provide training/education to psychology doctoral students, psychology postdocs, medical students, and psychiatry residents, as well as to health care providers elsewhere in the hospital and in other area organizations.
